Markets Reacting to Flattening

By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst

Monday through Thursday Resolve

The market opened higher this morning, which isn’t very surprising.  It is counterintuitive, as the nation heads into the deadly period of coronavirus case growth, and the death and depletion of critical medical equipment.  But a trend has emerged of the market displaying serious resolve on Monday through Thursday, only to give up substantial ground on Friday sessions.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average

March 16 to March 19

-1,198

March 20

-913

March 23 to March 26

+3,378

March 27

-915

March 30 to April 2

-223

April 3

-360

Part of this morning’s action is coming in response to more encouraging words from President Trump and Vice President Pence on glimmers or signs the crisis could be reaching a plateau, coupled with encouraging signs across Europe and New York state, the hardest hit in America.  It’s a minute to minute situation, but everyone knows cases and death rates must flatten.

The stock market is trying to sniff out the timeline from coronavirus apex to potentially getting back to work, and the mounting damage during and lingering after the crisis has been resolved.

Portfolio Approach

We are adding a new Technology idea this morning. We are lowering Cash to 5% and increasing Technology to a 4 weight on our Model Portfolio. If you are not a current subscriber to our Hotline, click here to get started today.

Today’s Session

The markets are off to a very encouraging start, even as folks like Jamie Dimon are calling for a sharp recession that will rival 2008; yet, his bank probably won’t have to cut its dividend payments.  Folks make sure you watch what Wall Street is doing rather than the stuff they release for public consumption.
