Spotify has announced its intentions to go public via an initial public offering (IPO) sometime this year.  The company is one of those vaunted private companies with a valuation over one billion dollars known as unicorns.  Globally, there are 279 unicorns with a combined valuation of $1.0 trillion.

The track record of these companies going public is mixed at best, and there are numerous cautionary tales for investors looking to get in on the action of the next hot IPO. 

My beef with the Silicon Valley is their scheme of raising billions of dollars privately, which creates enormous wealth for only a few.
