Afternoon Note
In the last day of a stellar week, all indexes are in the green with the exception of the Nasdaq Composite. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is in the lead, up 0.56%, and crossed the 44,000 level for the first time.
Seven out of eleven sectors are in the green. The rate sensitive sectors are doing well, with Real Estate (XLRE) in the lead, gaining 1.62%, followed by Consumer Discretionary (XLY) and Utilities (XLU), both neck to neck for 2nd place. Materials (XLB) is the worst performer, down 0.91%.
The Consumer Sentiment Index rose 3.5% m/m to 73 and came in above the consensus of 71. Consumer Expectations also rose 5.9% m/m to 78.5 and came in above consensus estimates of 74.2. However, Current Economic Conditions fell 0.8% m/m to 64.4, below consensus estimates of 65.1.
Consumers expect inflation to stay at 2.6% in a year, decreasing from 2.7% in October, and its lowest reading since December 2020. However, the 5-10 year expectations ticked higher at 3.1%.
