Payne's Perspective: Pivotal Week
3/16/2026
Petro is more than oil. Over the past decade, I have been pounding the table on all the end products that use petroleum. Not a day goes by without us touching a dozen items made from petroleum. With that in mind, any interruption in supply will have consequences. It all gets back to life becoming more expensive. It is a driving force pushing the administration to end the conflict sooner rather than later. But the administration cannot allow public pressure, nudged by dishonest reporting, to wrap up the conflict too soon. Markets settle, and prices return to trend.
The world faces stress as long as the Hormuz Strait remains closed, and it's not only petroleum.
This oil shock is much smaller than previous shocks, but the bias in oil prices remains to the upside. And there will be an economic hit to the average household. But I think it will be short-lived.
