Every calendar year sees an assortment of surprises in the economy and stock market. Not only did 2023 have surprises, but the reaction to those surprises was also surprising. Who knew three of the largest bank failures in American history wouldn’t trigger a run on the banks?

Incidentally, there are still several ramifications from those bank bankruptcies. Unrealized losses at commercial banks are in the hundreds of billions of dollars.
