Dividend payout ratios continue to drift lower, down significantly over the last century. Dividends are just 17% of the S&P 500 total return from 2013 to 2022. Investors have mainly been pulling money out of dividend funds and exchange-traded-funds (ETFs). There were big hopes dividend payers would be a haven, but lots of investors have found more comfort in money markets and bonds.
