Corporate America has been busy returning capital to investors via buybacks and dividends. There is a chance new legislation that taxes buybacks could tilt more free cash flow into the latter. Buybacks are still more popular, but investors have sought companies with strong and steady dividend payouts.

The problem is even the highest yields aren’t keeping up with inflation, which is why the total appreciation is more critical than ever.
