Payne's Perspective: June 22, 2020: Fork in the Road

6/22/2020
By Charles Payne CEO & Principal Analyst

Last week, the nation hit a fork in the road in many aspects of life.

Race relations and the rise of Juneteenth as a potential national holiday marks the rapid change since the death of George Floyd. However, substantive progress will have to be measured years from now.  The fact is anything that does not include a massive educational reform, where all American children are given more rigorous educations from kindergarten on, will leave the nation in an uncompetitive position. Read my “Final Thoughts” on Juneteenth, and what this all means to me at the end of the report.

We have entered the political season. While recent polls give Joe Biden an overwhelming lead, Donald Trump was also counted out at this same point in 2016.  There will come a time very soon, where polls nudge the stock market; it’s still a month away. The stock market and economy have benefited mighty from President Trump’s policies - whether this will be enough to secure reelection remains to be seen.

The stock market took a fork in the road, as the NASDAQ Composite continued its juggernaut rebound, while the other major equity indices struggled. There was not a sense of panic, but it’s clear investors need a signal that the coast is still clear before jumping into stocks that are momentum battleships.
