The story hasn’t changed, at least not on the surface. Investing in dividends took a back seat over the past few years, which means corporations shifted their focus to buybacks and capital expenditures. However, this is precisely the time in history when it's essential to increase exposure to dividend payers – particularly companies that are growing, and committed to improving their payouts as well.

Last week's scare is a reminder that dividend stocks are a comfortable place to be when the chips are down.
