Let’s Remember Who We Are

By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst

The shooting of Steve Scalise, the majority whip and a staffer for Rep. Roger Williams, at a baseball field this morning has become the biggest news story of the day.  Rep Scalise and Rep. Williams were among several Republicans practicing for a charity game against Democrats tomorrow night when perhaps a lone gunman fired upwards of 100 shots.

There will be lots of speculation, and of course, lots of anger in the wake of this shooting.  Even as the nation extends prayers for the victims of this shooting, our fractured political environment is such that it probably does more to divide than heal.  Of course, motives are unknown at this point, but there is word the shooter, knowing both political parties were practicing in the area, asked someone “are these Republican or Democrats?”

Admittedly, this is even more freighting in the aftermath of so many terror incidents around the world but more recently in London.  These are crazy times, desperate times, and for too many, hopeless times.  But it’s also the time to remember who we are.  This morning a guy stopped me on the street to tell me how much he loves my work on television.

He discussed how he was from Eastern Europe and grew up under the yoke of communism, so he understood its dangers first hand.  He wondered why President Trump simply doesn’t go around Congress and make his entire agenda law.  While I understand his frustration, I reminded him American was founded on checks and balances, and even as the system is being gamed, it must be honored.

This is why America surpassed the rest of the world.

The rule of law is central to the Republic.  That being said, the reason nations in the past have embraced socialism and communism, and even ushered in dictatorships with open arms, was a sense of frustration.

Americans are frustrated for a variety of reasons, but we must keep our wits about us.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve is scheduled to be the biggest economic news today as conventional wisdom says there will be another rate hike.

The good news is the market is prepared and okay with the hike in part because most only see one more hike in 2017.  In fact, at this point, the market would welcome even more rate hikes if justified by underlying economic data and trends.

I love the resolve of this market, but this consolidation and rotation phase is also seeking fresh catalysts.

Happy 242 birthday to the United States Army

Happy 71 birthday to President Trump

In reference to the corruption of our politics...

In a class at my church called Love and Respect and based on the book of the same name, my wife and I both learned a key point. The foundation of a good marriage is assuming that your partner has good intentions. The thinking that the things they do are intentionally done to hurt you is poison.

I believe the point relates not only to marriage but also I think to any successful team goal, be it family, work, sports or even politics. Sure you can get things done by coercion or manipulation, but that eliminates future work together as trust is destroyed. I am not naive and do not necessarily think that most politicians operate under this principal foundation. I do know however that if your approach to reach your goals is a continual assault on the character of your opponents, there is then NO WAY that you can reach any meaningful negotiation because trust has been destroyed.

Both parties have had their dark moments when they could have done better, but in the past, they knew this and by acting accordingly were able to accomplish amazing things under Reagan and Clinton. In my humble opinion, something changed under Clinton and the democratic party went into character assassination 24/7 on a continual basis.

Since their ideology has failed and they are bereft of any idea on how to fix any thing, they are bankrupt as a party. The only way out is to attack the opposing party in an attempt to invalidate it.

Fortunately, more than half the country woke up to this truth along with the press being part of the corrupt formula for delivery of the message and elected a non-politician for president. The result of their non acceptance of the elections result has been to virtually bring our country to its knees.

The big question is, will the change agent elected by the people be able to create enough momentum to break this logjam. I pray so, because the alternative is something we have already seen for the last 8 years and definitely not where we need to go.

God bless America.

Charles, it is not just the rhetoric that causes this type of violence.

It is the fact that many Americans hate those who serve in Congress because they have 1) put the national 20 TRILLION dollars in debt therefore jeopardizing the ability of future generations to prosper, 2) have used their elected positions to enrich themselves / their families, 3) have voted themselves a extravagant pension WITHOUT the approval of the taxpayers that all elected individuals work for and 4) have allowed the nation to be INVADED by illegal immigrants.

This is why some of us in this society want those that put this nation 20 trillion in debt to be charged with TREASON and to stand trial for screwing the country.
