Hillary’s Socialist Pitch

By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst
8/11/2016 9:56 AM

It was another lackluster session for the market yesterday, which started on a slightly higher weakness in the U.S. dollar, but turned lower on a petroleum report that continues to illustrate the challenge of getting demand to overcome its overwhelming supply. So, investors moved back to the winning 2016 script of parking money into utilities and staples, and chasing stocks that are already enjoying a solid run.

On the New York Stock Exchange, 272 stocks hit new 52-week highs against only 7 hitting new lows. On the NASDAQ, 161 names closed at new highs against 35 at new lows. There were also more advancers than decliners on both exchanges.

Yesterday, there wasn’t anything special on the docket in terms of economic data or even corporate earnings.  After the bell, Shake Shack (SHAK) posted results that beat on revenue, earnings, and management increased its full-year guidance as the stock is getting hammered. Same-store-sales were 4.5%, and Wall Street was looking for 5.4%.  I think the initial reaction is overblown; there are growing concerns about consumers slipping back into their foxhole after a sharp increase in spending and credit card usage.

Today, we will see if the Street reacts to Hillary Clinton’s economic plan as this will be the biggest news barring any manufactured outrage or new email leaks.

I will say ahead of Hillary’s proposal that this race comes down to one party that believes it should take the leading role in taking of us from cradle to grave. And aims to limit wealth and upside potential as a way to making sure the rich aren’t too rich and the poor aren’t too poor.

Some would call that noble, but the poor would still be poor and everyone probably would be unsatisfied with lives unfulfilled by the inability to live.  It’s not just a human need to take chances and risks, and to enjoy its rewards; it’s an instinct prevalent throughout the animal kingdom.

Still, opinions ebb and flow; it’s clear that westerners in general and Americans in particular are seeking a solution for the nagging growth problems that stretch back three or more decades. Overall, Americans are not fans of socialism, but a deeper look explains the success of Bernie Sanders and why we might hear the greatest pitch for wealth redistribution in the history of presidential elections.

Democrats overall have a more favorable view of socialism than capitalism.

Today’s Session

Good earnings from retailers such as Macy’s and Kohl’s, coupled with oil stabilizing and lower initial jobless claims, is taking the market slightly higher. U.S. import prices were up 0.1% in July, an unexpected increase, and revised upwardly to a 0.6% increase in June.

The reason that Dems are open to "socialism" is two-fold. First, most never experienced the Cold War era pictures of bread lines in USSR reminiscent of Depression-era America. Secondly, they have been indoctrinated by the US education system that socialism is "fair", and the "everyone gets a trophy" crowd loves that!

We have a responsibility to educate our young people on the lessons of history . . . they seem to be blind to the ravages perpetrated in Socialist countries . . . How much farther does one have to look to see the results already apparent around the world in countries like Venezuela, Greece, Italy, etc.?

Hillary's and Obama's love for socialism has nothing to do with fairness or her naivete about the Soviet. It has to do with her thirst for power over everyone and everything. That's why the Dems lie to the poor to get them roll over for their false promises. Unfortunately, they have confused the rest of us with their talk of fairness & understanding. To quote M. Scott Peck: "One of the characteristics of evil is its desire to confuse," and, boy, are they succeeding! He also writes with great foresight, "The evil are to be pitied, not hated, because they live their lives in sheer terror." Imagine Hillary's constant dread. Her "fear of being found out" must be monumental. Trump should read the book, "People Of the Lie" by M. Scott Peck.

Would you include Sweden, Norway, Finland and even by the American definition Canada, New Zealand and Australia in your list of failed socialist countries with higher taxes on higher incomes and universal health care?

Don Selman on 8/11/2016 1:12:38 PM
Don: My best friend just got back from a month's vacation (last week)in Norway. He and his wife were presented with their bill: 1x 12" pizza, 1 topping; 1 draft beer; 1 glass of tap water: $52 USD before tip. Is that "fair?

kev on 8/11/2016 2:34:35 PM
oops, forgot to answer Don's question! YES, I would, it's called American exceptionalism.... globalists "just" don't get it!

As Esau traded off his heritage for a mess of pottage, we are perfectly capable of trading off our human freedom for handouts from the increasingly powerful state. Yes, many countries are going in that direction, including ours. But that doesn't make it hopeful or right. Erich Fromm was, I think, correct when he called Orwell's 1984 "a warning that unless the course of history changes, men all over the world will lose their most human qualities, will become soulless automatons, and will not even be aware of it." A country that casually aborts a million of its own children every year is already there. We're not even aware of the terrible price we will have to pay for that.

Sorry to be so late on the run today but this is easy. They do not teach real history today but revised history according to the Democrats reconstructed view of history and economics. That such a high percentage of our young are for socialism is a testimony to the success of them controlling the educational construct of this country... Sad indeed!

To respond to Mr. Howard, another liberal who's enamored with Scandinavia, let me educate you. Let's start with Norway: do you know what drives their wealth? North sea Oil! They drill off shore. Oh well, liberals are against fossil fuels so scratch Norway. Let's go on to Sweden. Do you know you're better off being the top 1% in Sweden than in the US. Why? Yes, you'll pay more in taxes but as opposed to here you'll actually get the benefits that everyone else gets. You want to be like Sweden Mr. Howard? Does that mean you're willing to double or triple taxes on the lowest wage workers? Because the lowest tax bracket is 28%. The highest is only 56%. Sales tax is 25% and gasoline, which you hate anyhow, is around $7 a gallon. And BTW, Sweden has national school choice and not just for the poor but for everyone. How would that go down with Democrats, considering they're on the pockets of the Teachers Unions? Also businesses operate under less regulation there than here. Socialism means everyone pays. What Democrats are proposing is income confiscation, which is really fascism. But, them again, the Nazis were actually The National Socialist Party.

To Warren Greshes: Where did you get the idea that I'm a liberal and love Scandinavia? I think you confused me with Don Selman.
