Still Locked In A Range

By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst

Yesterday, was a solid day for the market, the kind of bounce back we’ve seen from time to time, but one that has run out of gas all year long.  The market is locked in a narrow range with rallies fading and freefalls reversing on cue, according to established technical parameters.

The only negative thing with the session; in addition to the sharp pullback into the close, was the volume or lack thereof.  Still, every S&P sector was higher for the session save for utilities. Consumer discretionary names in travel such as Expedia (EXPE), Priceline (PCLN), and Trip Adviser (TRIP) enjoyed great sessions while Harley Davidson (HOG) popped and merger activity in auto parts, pushed Delphi (DLPH) and BorgWarner (BWA).

Last week, I pointed out that small cap names were beginning to make big moves; that trend continues.  The Russell 2000 is the most compelling index.  The small-cap index making a series of new highs and lows, it seems to have a clear path to 1,204.

The Russell could be poised for a huge move, in part to a short squeeze that isn’t too far from here.  I don’t think any equity index will go too far in front of the pack, but the current action is telling.  The market is looking for the right news to spark a run.

Also, crude oil is looking good again, and the next move through $51 on a closing basis will be huge.  Make sure you have exposure.  I think the best way is a big name that pays a hefty dividend and a higher-risk beaten down name that’s on the mend.

Today, Janet goes to the Hill and she’ll have to ask questions about everything under the sun; she might opine on Fed policy, too.

Today’s Session

Equity futures having given up a big chunk of the gains before the open underscores that same angst that saw the rally cut in half moments before yesterday's close.  Earnings warning from Werner (WERN) is the kind of news that reminds the market of a sloppy recovery still riddled with potholes and frustrations.  Let’s see how things shake out.

Were I a Brit, I would vote to exit the EU. It's sad to see the descendants of a once great empire choose to subjugate themselves to a bunch of stupid self serving, foreign bureaucrats. Whatever short term difficulties Brexit would cause would be more than compensated by long term opportunities and gains.

No...but they should. EU was a flawed concept from the beginning and it's unlikely to survive, in its current form, over long term. Cultural, Social, Finc'l imbalances will never be equitably integrated...ESPECIALLY with unelected officials in Brussels governing!!

Yes, because they don't feel safe now.

Polls are being manipulated to suppress vote. I think Brits will leave union - largely on immigration fears and nationalism. Less government = more freedom

I think the No's will prevail as the general population in under the impression that "the government" is their best way, basically the same belief that has consumed the US.

No -- but I would vote yes. I think most EU members lose more in concessions than they gain in benefits from this union.

Patricia Flynn on 6/21/2016 11:07:58 AM
. . . so I would vote to get out, even though I think the vote will be to stay, but will be close enough to get the EU's attention.

Patricia Flynn on 6/21/2016 11:13:37 AM
Stop to think about the issue of this so-called Brexit. Obama voice HIS opinion and said Britain should STAY in the EU. If I were a Brit, that, in and of ITSELF would be enough for ME to vote: LEAVE. After all...who is HE to be telling ANOTHER world leading nation what to do???

James Allan on 6/21/2016 12:52:24 PM
Get over it Britain....you no longer the commonwealth you once were....the colonies are gone and you are not surviving well with the rest of the world including Europe.

karin on 6/21/2016 1:13:54 PM
People are more concerned with influx of undesirable immigrants and supporting others than worrying about temporary economy problems.

Jim Lowenberg on 6/21/2016 2:12:13 PM
They will vote to stay even though it should be no. The EU is doomed and Britain will go down with it as it has been trending.
