Washington DC vs. Washington DC

The market is cautious, but most professional investors suspect a deal will get done to bring the latest chapter of the DC madness to a (temporary) close. I continue to see a deal that looks like this:

> Continuing resolution
> Higher debt ceiling
> Continuation of sequestration
> Continuation of Obamacare

Maybe there could be something about the medical device tax, which negatively impacts several Democratic districts and everyone directly and indirectly, with fewer funds for research and development. That's the only wildcard I can see at this time.

Both parties are taking it on the chin.

70% of respondents blame Republicans for the madness, while President Obama's job approval has plunged to 37%-ouch! There have been miscues on both sides beginning with the first salvo from the house that should have focused on delaying the so-called individual mandate.

Since then, Reid has rejected all kinds of commonsense good stuff passed by the House and President Obama resisting a piecemeal solution seems as intransigent as any demand others are making. On that note, yesterday Washington DC took on Washington DC.

Local elected leaders took national leadership to task with Eleanor Homes Norton reportedly dressing down President Obama for rejecting a House bill that would allow the District to fund itself beyond October 17. She's a tough woman that always speaks her mind, so I'm not surprised she was boisterous and strong, but everyone seemed shocked she took what some are calling a "parochial" approach with the Commander in Chief.

She wasn't alone. Reportedly Mayor Vincent Gray took on Harry Reid over the same topic pulling no punches in a desperate bid to save his constituents from maximum pain that the White House has been using to score the ultimate pyrrhic public relations victory. This is the same mayor that cared enough for the poor people in his town to veto a bill that would have unfairly made Wal-Mart fork over higher minimum wages.

Both sides are self-destructing.

I think when it's all said and done John Boehner will say he fought the good fight but didn't have the troops. One thing Republicans have going for them is Obamacare is a disaster and the less they point it out the more it can reveal itself. Each day I hear more and more stories (see sidebar) about its destructive path. In the meantime, the economic recovery is so flaccid there is no doubt it will be blamed on Washington DC shenanigans instead of policies that are actually designed to cripple our unfair economic system.

In the meantime, Shelia Jackson Lee is strongly hinting that Martial Law should be declared by the White House. Perhaps one side is actually self-destructing more rapidly than the other.

Great article many positive & negative points I've read here. One other point about the R's is they are at least "trying" to reduce spending but that's probably the tea-party which I think is a good check/balance. Thanks for letting me give feedback.

I am torn between hoping and fearing that Ms. Lee gets her wish. Martial law would bring this to a head in a way where sanity could be fully restored, but the immediate cost would be enormous.

Obama was raised as a Moslem terrorist. His support of terrorist relatives in Africa ten years ago and his recent comments on Syria both show that he considers violence as a valid path to his own continuance in unquestioned power. This is also consistent with his political training in Illinois, where crocked politicians using Mafia tactics are the norm. And this is showing now as what he is saying to Boehner is the only acceptable answer is a "clean bill" which means he wants unlimited spending on whatever he chooses, not what the people want or what makes sense or what is affordable.

If his power play on this issue succeeds, all is lost for the country. If it fails, it is a real possibility that he is foolish enough to play the marrial law card. Fortunately for the country, the military and the police are staffed with many more real Americans than flaming socialists. Playing the martial law card would end his presidency. Either he would be assassinated or enprisoned. If the corrupt Supreme Court supported him, all the better as they would also be removed by force. Congress would get restored to power by force, and the unchecked executive power we are suffering under would be reversed for decades. We might even reverse some of the ludicrous Supreme Court decisions which have stripped us of our Constitutional rights. I would fight to support the US Constitution against Obama, and I am certain that the majority of the legal weapons in this country are owned by people who feel the same.

As for the stalemate in Washington, I think Boehner will win. Boehner will continue to work toward compromise. Eventually the facts will leak out around the socialist media, and pressure will mount on Obama to accept compromise. He will resist as long as he can because he knows that losing this battle will make him a lame duck president and the Demoncrats would have to win the House in 2014 to reverse that. Likewise, Boehner knows that backing down again ends his ability to strive for sanity in government, so he has nothing to lose by fighting to the finish.

Obama and Boehner remind me of a dysfunctional couple fighting over money, but the real problem runs deeper in the ideological conflict between them Meanwhille, just like the kids in a dysfunctional marriage, it's the public that gets screwed. Obviously, Sheila Jackson Lee wants to call the cops to make sure her side wins. Boehner better stick to his guns or he is going to lose his tailfeathers. Meanwhile, God help the public. This could go all the way.

Nobody has to blink. All you have to do is win elections. Duh!
