White Flags Unfurled

Used French Rifle For Sale...Only Dropped Once

Something interesting happened last week—there was an epiphany. It wasn't a Eureka moment about the shabby state of this recovery. It was deeper than that for sure. The stock market sold off on Friday over the realization that white flags are going up all over the country as people are walking to the dugout of life. While the French ditched their closest attempt at true capitalism after one term with Sarkozy, the American people were making a similar retreat from the greatness of free markets as hundreds of thousands bolted from the labor force last month. Oddly, they have something akin to socialism to make their exits more pleasant.

Time to Stop Bitching About College

I keep hearing people talk about college as a form of medieval punishment and not something that has propelled our nation higher and further. It's supposed to be an investment. It's supposed to make life easier. It is those things and more as a matter of fact. Also, it's voluntary. If people don't think it's worth it, they shouldn't go or shouldn't major in something that proves to be a financial dead-end. Or, take any course you want but don't demand I pay for it or corporate America or the oil companies or anyone else. I cannot believe that somehow the narrative is focused on government artificially holding down college cost and getting others to pay for it.

This is a welfare for the elite part of a new caste system but par for the course that has seen a bailout of banks, mind boggling numbers on food stamp, and free cell phones to help people get jobs (heard that on the radio over the weekend-people are disadvantaged in the job market without a cell phone and internet access-so taxpayers must fork over the money). In addition to all the evidence that college adds at least an extra million dollars to a paycheck over a career, they are fairing so much better in this economy than the rhetoric would imply. The better the education the greater the participation rate and the lower the unemployment rate.

Swan Song for Europe

I find it remarkable how swiftly Europeans are giving up on austerity and even saying it doesn't work. It's been a day since several European nations decided to try fiscal responsibility, but that was too much for them to stand. For some reason, they believe they can go back to spending and, in the case of France, work less and retire earlier, and somehow it makes for a successful economy.

I'm not completely surprised but still no less offended and worried that this nanny state, I want to get but not to work, mentality could drift across the Atlantic—not that it's not already here beyond the incubation phase. In the meantime, elections in France, Greece and even Germany point to success for candidates promising something for nothing.

Today's Session

I'm not convinced today is going to be a bloodbath, but the early part of the session sends a message about success coexisting with failure and the ability to thrive when people are giving up. Note we could have another tough day overall.

Why?? We have grown a couple of generations that think things should be handed to them on a silver platter and that they should be rewarded just because. It is the "me first" mentality of people who think they should be taken care of by the government. It also doesn't help when the Democrats want to keep the poor on the welfare dole in order to strengthen their voting base. We have half the country taking care of business while the other half sits on their butts and do absolutely nothing to contribute to the good of society and the country. We have dumbed down our schools which also contributes to the "government take care of me" mentality. Kids do not work hard in school and when they graduate, they are all prepared for an easy paying job of which none exist. You have to work to earn the paycheck!!

Ignorance, complacency and sense of entitlement are all thoughts that come to mind. There is a false belief by some that government benefits just materialize from thin air or that the successful owe it to others to pay more. Frustrating that there isn't more outrage at the level of deficit spending, government control and taxation that we are enduring.

Our "greatest generation" has come and gone. Today those would be very disappointed at the laziness of our labor force. I'm convinced if we had a body of politicians screaming the mantra of "work harder, you're on your own" rather than "we'll take care of you" our country and individuals alike would be better off.

Because it is all they have known. What we have lost sight of is that the history that made America a once great nation is not known by a growing majority of the U.S. population. It is assumed that because America is the "richest nation on earth", the "haves" should be taking care of the "have nots." If the "haves" won't do it willingly, then it is the rightful and intended purpose of the government to force such redistribution to happen. I fear it is to late for America to reverse this course which was started by Roosevelt. If this mindset wins in November, America will be accelerated into a socialism from which it may never recover. The recall election in Wisconsin will tell us a lot. I pray for the right outcome.

FDR realized that the ticket to unlimited re-election was a passive, ignorant, compliant, and subsurvient majority who could be kept in a dependent position by government transfer of wealth to them. It was Nero (I believe) who said "give them bread and circuses." The policy of the Democratic party has not changed since then. Z

President Obama is not a leader, he is a modern version of the fairy tale version of the Pied Piper hired by George Soros to bring down capitalism so Soros can have his "new world order." The puppet strings between Soros and Obama are very visible for those who are paying attention. It is really that simple. Things will get gruesome. The sooner the conservatives gain control, the less gruesome it will be. If Obama wins another term, things will get more gruesome for a longer period of time. We have a President that does not understand the difference between fact and fiction, a judgement made based on what he says and what he does. Not a pretty picture!

We have stopped rewarding excellence. Everyone gets a trophy doesn't work so well. It used to be what you reward you get more of. Now we reward mediocrity and even below that. How about you need a 3.0 to go to college with a government back loan or grant? How about you don't pass a grade without a 2.0? Can't get 7 out of 10 steps correct? Then, you have to try again. We say you go 6 out 10 correct, you pass. Grades are so inflated. It starts in Kindergarden and sets the pace throughout. We need to put competition back into life. We don't have to say people who can't excell at academics are no good, we can excell at vocational subjects also. But, we have to have competition back. We are headed so far down and most people have to clue. The majority of people can't recall that they had a class called civics say nothing about knowing the difference between capitalism, socialism, and communism, and they don't care. They know they are super great and they deserve their rights which now incluse a right to food, healthcare, shelter, ipods, etc. It is extremely say. And then Howard Dean on Face the Nation can tell bald face lies and more and more people believe it. It is extremely sad. You can't learn from history if you don't know the history. I taught history and math. Even the kids who make As and Bs don't recall a bit of it a few weeks after the unit was taught.

Where do we go from here? Most likely down hill showly and then quickly.

The true problem here is this: We, as a society, have forgotten that the federal government, by its design in the Constitution, should have almost no impact on the lives of Citizens who do not reside or work within the federal sphere. Inside the federal sphere the federal government may do as it pleases - places like D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. territories and possessions. Outside of that sphere it is limited to the enumerated powers of the Constitution. We have slowly allowed the federal government to encroach and the government has made it all the easier by bribing us with things like food stamps, tuition loans, medicare, medicaid and a host of other government programs. It is fine for the government to institute those programs for those people in the federal sphere and over whom the government has jurisdiction. But, it was designed so that it has very little jurisdiction over us (enumerated powers) and therefore, by design, it should have very little impact on our lives. Look at what we have let it evolve into. Time to get back to basic civics folks!

Some people want to achieve, while others just want to be taken care of.

Gary Brandin on 5/7/2012 11:43:35 AM
In answer to your question, I believe we have succeeded in raising a generation or two that is obsessed with themselves - a generation saturated in selfishness. Ironically, they believe they are exactly the opposite - that they are sharers and givers. The only problem is they are generous and giving of other peoples hard work, not their own. Many have no real experience with the realities of life. They think that they are entitled to a life of ease in which the government provides everything to them. This way of thinking I believe has in part come from the hippie mentality of my age group. Many of those old hippies have never grown up and many of them are now running countries and teaching in our colleges. Maybe the other cause is that the communist have been successful in influencing a couple of generations over the years through propaganda - just like Khrushchev predicted. One thing is clear, with the kind of mentality that is out there, it is no wonder that the socialists keep getting elected. They are the ones that are going to give this generation what they want or so they think. The other thing that is clear from watching Europe is, socialism clearly does not work!!

Although it is little known, even John Lennon came to realize the error in a socialistic world.

I am afraid of the future!

It appears to me it all about the Robbin Hood syndrome. The media and liberal politicians make the compelling Hollywood argument that taking from the rich and giving to the poor is not only moral but just. So long as the conservatives agree to debate the issues on that subject they will lose every time. They must shift the argument to your frequent position, that these liberal policies only hurt the people they are intended to enrich-en. Romney better learn from this, as you can see what happens when you lose the moral argument.

We're asleep in our complacency because we don't understand that somewhere in Africa today there is a young man who is witnessing for life by trying to persuade other Africans not to kill their babies. He is broke and doesn't have $30 to get a room for the night. Yet he persists because God mysteriously saved him when he was once abandoned on the street as an infant. You can find him on Facebook. His name is Richard Sempala. He, too, is a friend of mine. We no longer believe in sacrificing for anything because we're spoiled by our own prosperity. Yet the only way out for us is for us to relearn the meaning of sacrifice.

To really make the right thing happen, it should be a top down thing, starting with the politicians and political leadership, which we have none of. They need to set the example, cut their pay and retirements and benefits, then when the populace see that they will be more likely to come on board. Sarkozy gave his ministers very substantial raises and added staff when he became President, then he started to his austerity; no leadership, it did not sit well with many in France. Many know he was doing the right thing by the austerity and changing the retirement, but it needs to be a top down example. I know of people that did not vote for him because of this, even though they know that more socialism is not the proper way to go. When the USA starts to clean house starting at the top, the people will probably get the message and then there will be a political will to do what is right. We need ethical leadership, that leads by example. I do not see it in any of the major countries in the world right now and definitely not in the USA. Oh where have all the leaders gone, long, long time ago???

I will say I think Hollande is a very ethical man, one that listens to all sides and looks for consensus; and he may end up surprising everyone, he may be a much different leader than every one thinks.

Sorry, but your question is heavily loaded to elecit the kind of response that you're looking for...that of buying into the garbage that it suggests. You don't want to have a dialogue when you're being an idealogue.

Charles I love your perspective and read you carefully daily but you need to get the lines right: its "For Sale; one French (Italian)? army rifle. Never fired, dropped once."

Because they are a generation (or two) who were raised by parents who did not want their children to suffer the hard times they did.(Good Intentions). When they became affluent, their children got all the things their parents could afford for them. There was no training in handling money, budgeting, OR the need to get a menial job like delivering newspapers, or working in the local grocery store. We even joke about the kid who actually thought all you had to do to get money was go to the machine. The unintended consequences was a lack of all'round basic skills, the loss of incentive to set goals, and little or no work ethic. The sense of entitlement followed because it became their lifestyle, becoming the NEED rather than the DESIRE, hence the mindset that they were now "entitled" to a free education, free medical care, etc. They never had "skin in the game", so it is likely they will never understand or participate in what the American Dream is all about. So very sad for us, and if we don't work to change things, even sadder for this nation. Sacrifice is no longer looked upon as a virtue, but it is what made our nation like no other on earth. I pray we all re-evaluate.

What a greedy bunch of lemmings. The suspicion emerges that, with such a large largesse pot to distribute from, it is ridiculously easy for the distributors to pocket a hefty cut as they toss their trinkets into the crowd from their parade float budgets.

Too many people are looking at the next guy who is sitting at the house sleeping in and getting the government check every month. They start thinking," Why am I busting my hump everyday, slugging it out, when the Jones' are doing ok at the government teet." Too many people are becoming sluggards that aren't willing to work, save and plan ahead. It comes down to character.
