Home Furnishings, Home Improvement Stocks Rise on Economic Data

U.S. home improvement and home furnishings stocks rallied Monday, outperforming the broader markets in the wake of modest, positive surprises in economic indicators.
Wall Street Strategies analyst Brian Sozzi said another factor in Monday's gains could be that many of the home furniture manufacturers are heavily shorted - that is, investors have borrowed shares from brokers, betting they can repay the lender later with shares purchased at lower prices and pocket the difference. Pressure to cover open positions amid the broader market's rise might be exacerbating gains Monday.
But he and others said there's scant evidence that demand is picking up for big-ticket spending on things like furniture and major renovations.
"I don't think the spending numbers really support the notion that people are going back into stores to invest in furniture packages," Sozzi said.
