Costco profit hit by strong dollar, higher costs

Costco Wholesale Corp. reported Thursday that fiscal third-quarter profit fell 29%, hurt by a stronger dollar, a litigation settlement and employee health-care costs.

Rival BJ's Wholesale Club Inc., more heavily concentrated in the Northeast, reported last week that profit rose a better-than-expected 41% and would have risen 7.5% without the impact of lower gasoline sales. BJ's comparable sales have outpaced results at Costco for 13 straight months, according to analyst Brian Sozzi of Wall Street Strategies.
