New poll says respect for police nears all-time high

Oct. 25, 2016 - 4:35 - Former NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik on a new poll about respect for police in America.

Great news for our men and women in blue, there has been a huge surge in respect for police in America.  There are many reasons for this but I will say it’s overdue.

Sadly part of the reason for this greater appreciation has been the mass assassinations of police officers throughout the nation.  These men and women put their lives on the line each day they put on the uniform.  Some, including my one of my nephews, have gone even further by getting tattoos and living as a gang member in order to protect the community.

I was growing up in Harlem during the period when such appreciation was in freefall and I must say there were many lessons learned then that I think are finally being applied.  Police chiefs are speaking to communities in a way that acknowledges everyone’s concerns and even pointing out the rare bad apples will not be tolerated. 

The big question is where we go from here?
