Tonight, we will get the first of several GOP presidential debates and there will be lots of talk about bringing America back to greatness. Bringing America back to greatness means different things to different people; however, there was a time when everyone agreed our space program was the perfect symbol of our exceptionalism. Today, NASA forked over $490 million to extend Russia’s role in taking our astronauts into space.

There is a lot of finger pointing on this, but I say that if we had a robust economy, abandon the welfare Utopia, and replaced it with a focus on each individual living up to their potential; we could afford to send our own explorers into space.

Neil Armstrong’s famous call to NASA from the Moon has a much different meaning these days:

 “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”

I think we can turn the corner, but this is crunch-time. The world is catching up and piggybacking rides to space from Russia; and China is the ultimate red flag.
