All Quiet – For Now

By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst

Last week, I had a potential subscriber who told me he was worried about the market because it was too volatile. I have heard this many times this year, although there have been periods of time when the market has moved sideways. In fact, several periods have established new records.

We enter the week with the S&P 500 trading between 2,200 and 2,100 for 64-days straight which feels intense; however, it’s anything but volatile.  I am not sure about the changes this week with the economic calendar:

So, the breakout for the S&P 500 is clear at 2,200 on a closing basis. On the downside, 2,100 is not a lot to stop the index from hitting 2,000, which is something akin to a must-hold support point.

I will say the fact that the Volatility Index (VIX) is down, 26% year-to- date; it might be a sign of complacency. But I must also underscore the fact that we shouldn’t conflate complacency with overconfidence.  This continues to be the most hated rally in history, one of its greatest attributes.

We enter the week with a market that’s very tepid and by no means cocky, but it does need a spark.

Today’s Session

Some market watchers are saying the market will be higher at the open as a reflection of Hillary Clinton winning last night’s debate.  I don’t think she won but there wasn’t a knockout on either side.  I think the action might be more in line with the notion of a Goldilocks recovery that powers enough jobs and spending to keep the GDP in the black, but nowhere near the kind of growth that suggest inflation is an issue.

Trump is right, Hil-Liary is no Lincoln.

Although the debate was 3 to 1 at the beginning, Trump deftly turned their attacks around using the old Japanese technique of Akaido by keep his calm, expressing his remorse, and then by turning it around by exposing Hillary's hypocrisy. Unlike the first debate when he was overly defensive, he counterpunched effectively and by the end Hillary was on the ropes with nothing but her phony smile to help her. She did end it gracefully by complimenting Trump on his kids, but in a way that only underscored her weakness considered her checkered past. Unlike Trump, she gave no signs of any remorse for her past failings. So in a real sense, the moral victory was Trump's because he got honest. The only thing that can trip him up now is something far worse being revealed.

It depends on what you are looking for, a Pope or someone to lead this country.

Once he was through debating the moderators, I wondered whether Trump would get appropriate time to debate his opponent.

Why won't MSNBC or CNN commentators admit that Donald J. Trump clearly won the 2nd debate?

Why the main press is pro socialist, really? My theory is that the main press average viewership is the less privilege. The affluent does not watch or buy newspapers. Therefore the main press is fighting for a market that, on paper, is very leftist, interested in scandals that the “Rich” do. To me this is wrong FOX New Network and FOX Business are very successful because they are fair and are not pushing scandals for the sake of it. Both networks perform a new analysis that reflect what has news value, is just and fact based.

I'am absolutely disgusted by the way the country is supporting the Clinton's. This is nothing new, but the woman IS a criminal. I'm hopeful the day comes when she is indicted by a Trump Administration.

I also cannot understand the attitude of public thinking, loss of life is okay and she doesn't need to be held accountable.

But then again, we have gone through a presidency that doesn't like America and has "0" respect for the people, but they don't get it. His total lack of respect for our military is appalling! I cannot figure out how half of America thinks resident Obama has done a good job.

Unfortunately, it's going to take a major wake up call for people to understand that way of thinking needs a change...

My vote will go for real change. Even Republicans are intimidated. That's really evident by them pulling support for Trump. He's not the greatest, but he could make an impact to get us back on track.

Sorry for the rant. See you this evening @ 6:00pm

I am a woman who found it brutal to watch a woman fake it so much.

Considering it was dumb and dumber debating, Homer Simpson could have easily won. Trump + Clinton = 2 Losers

The #1 issue in this election is stopping the progressives from moving America into a ONE WORLD Nation. Hear HRC in 2nd debate to SUP. CT. Justices & BO UN talks.

For years,
Obama's economy has been the Zombie economy.
When will it come back to life?

Joseph F Tucciarone on 10/14/2016 3:11:56 PM
By a landslide. He needs to stay focused on the issues and point out the major differences between he and she.

Dan M on 10/14/2016 6:47:39 PM
Donald Trump needs to embellish with further detail on his quest to show the progressive left there truly is a "left wing conspiracy" aimed against the basic morality and principles of this wonderful country.

Robert Plowman on 10/14/2016 9:20:07 PM
I think Donald Trump, will not by supper amount, but will make a big different elections, people should sign-up for Poll Worker and Keep Eye Open For Strangle On going thing's. Jeffrey ----- on 10/17/2016 6:52:01 PM
Trump has good intentions and I believe he truly wants to better America and get rid of corruption in the government. He just needs to stay focused and not let Hillary get "under his skin"
