Afternoon Note
Perhaps, because it’s a holiday-day session, the market is ignoring a huge move in China which began bouncing off a double bottom last week. The Shanghai is up 8.2% from the September 29 low and is breaking a key resistance point, mostly on speculation of a big stimulus package. Technically, the Shanghai has room to 3,600 as the next test of resistance.
The big mover today is crude oil, which isn’t impacting the board market. Oil has traded in lock-step with the stock market for a while, but probably wouldn’t mind if oil was low enough to have a real impact on other parts of the economy. (Of course, oil-related stocks play a big role in several major indices.)
Interesting, oil is down even as China is up as it stands to reason that whatever the leaders of China decide on, from more empty cities to more (money-losing) high speed rail projects, their demand for crude will tick higher.
The action is lackluster, but the bias still to the upside and that’s important this week.
