Knowing When To Buy And When To Sell

By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst

I have put together some tips on buying and selling stocks in the current market. Nothing pains me more than seeing investors miss out on big profits or take unnecessary losses. I am sad to see anyone take a loss, although it is part of investing. However, when it happens out of frustration, then it can be a long term hurdle to maximizing profits.

There are several things to look for when considering the perfect entry point.  One is your time horizon and another is your risk tolerance.

Although I believe in investing in great individual companies with huge upside potential, it is difficult for them to gain upside traction if the broad market is sloppy or retreating.  On that note, while the broad market has had an amazing rally over the past year, it has not only stalled, but is marked by a tremendous number of major losers.

Recently, up to 20% of stocks in the S&P 500 were down more than 20% or in correction territory. So, how do you tell which stocks have upside potential?
