The Donald Talking Smack and Waking it Up

By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst
6/17/2015 5:30 AM

“I’m really rich!” That’s just one of the observations made by the latest candidate to throw his hat in the presidential ring. It was the most badass announcement to date.

Assets

$9.2 billion

Liabilities

$0.5 billion

Net Worth

$8.7 billion

Donald Trump is now in the race and it’s all about Machiavelli, not Dale Carnegie. The man is not trying to make any friends; he even seems willing to make a few new enemies.

First, he crushes his GOP foes; actually saying that one was so oblivious that he “sweated like a dog” when he made the announcement (referring to Rick Perry). He harshly dismissed Jeb and he did not seem to take Marco Rubio seriously either.

However, he called the folks in Washington of all stripes “losers” controlled by special interest. The fact is that Donald Trump is a billionaire and he is not taking any money, which means true independence. In fact, his candor also hints at being an independent, even though he seemed to be reaching for the top of the GOP Republican ticket.

Then, Trump threw down the gauntlet on China, Japan, and Mexico. While complimenting China and Japan for taking advantage of inept U.S. negotiators, he sent out a salvo that things would be different.  He also took a shot at Ford for breaking ground on a $2.5 billion plant in Mexico; he stated he would call the CEO and let him know that each car, truck, and part would be slapped with a 35% tax when it is sold in the United States.

He stated that Mexico was learning how to game the United States through trade policies. And his comments about the country dumping its problem citizens on America may have rankled a few people living in Mexico and living here. He went on to say that drugs, crime, and rapists from Mexico and other nations would be slowed or presumed stopped with a southern wall between the nations and that Mexico would have to pay for it.

Donald Trump vows that he would be “the greatest jobs president that God ever created!”

He’s got a lot of bravado, but will America buy it? I am not sure, but I will not write-off Donald Trump, nor will I ignore the things he said yesterday because the majority of what he said needed to be said.

Moreover, the fact is that like most great CEOs, the Commander-in-Chief must also be Chief Excitement Officer…enough already with how horrible this nation has become under a system that rewards hard work and even sloth, too.

Today’s Session

This morning, FedEx laid an egg, missing on top and bottom lines. The misses were large just enough to serve as a proxy for the economy and what the Fed does next. The economy is just not there yet. Yes, there are other factors in the FedEx number, but there was nothing robust that speaks to an economy in the midst of taking off. On the contrary, it feels like we will plod along for a while.

In the meantime, the company lowered its economic outlook for the United States this year.

I think the Fed would like to hike rates this week for some form of credibility, but I don't know they can do it in September unless there is dramatic evidence the economy is on fire. Right now, it’s barely smoldering.

Thin line between confidence and cockiness and he steps over it many times, but I love the guy. He did say what needed to be said and heard. His first book "The Art of the Deal" reiterates what he said today about dealing, negotiating, and compromising, and also walking away from a bad deal. The only place for him in Washington is at the top.

jim w on 6/17/2015 9:07:27 AM
He is arrogant. He is cocky...but he is, and always has been effective at whatever challenges he faces. He may be just what this country needs. Someone who is not a politician, someone who gets the job done, someone who can negotiate at a global level [with global leaders], and someone who truly believes in America... and does it with COURAGE and PASSION. Our entire Congress and President are feckless jokes. Would you want to be on the other side of a negotiation with him? I believe he can re-vitalize America as a Super-Power again; and to totally revitalize our Economy. I did not really consider him until I listened to his speech. He said what most Americans want and are thinking, but are too afraid to say. It will definitely take someone with REAL courage to win against any of the "Washington" crowd. Who knew? Go Donald!!

FMT on 6/17/2015 9:58:29 AM
Can't say that Trump has my vote just yet, but I can see it happening. I appreciate the straight talk and the things he said that I have been thinking for years. America needs candor and courage to begin restoring this nation to the freedom and wealth that only capitalism can bring. I'm sick of false modesty!

Pat H on 6/17/2015 10:01:48 AM
Interesting how all the talking heads dismiss him, and most in a "leadership" position in this country. As if somehow Trump could do much worse than what we've got, or what we're gonna get.

I always get this feeling that I was born 30 years too late. Nothing seems to fit any longer.

David on 6/17/2015 10:03:56 AM
Love the condor, he nailed the situation with Mexico, not sure if he has my vote but love what he can bring to the political discourse

Joe Brown on 6/17/2015 10:28:35 AM
Refreshing!Being a politician wouldn't be Donald's career. He doesn't seem embarrassed to be an American!Love him or hate him he makes things happen & says what he thinks. Not sure I would vote for him, but I wouldn't dismiss him. We could do worse, wait.....

Bman on 6/17/2015 10:30:37 AM
Teddy Roosevelt and Donald Trump are two peas in a pod that are separated by cultures. One could relate to Teddy from personal experience, Donald's culture is mush. Those needed to elect him in 2016 can't hear a word he says. Mush rules our culture!

rimmer on 6/17/2015 10:57:24 AM
I just love that someone that candid is in the race. I hope he gets to debate. Other candidates have to address these issues and how they do will define them.

K Makinney on 6/17/2015 11:25:26 AM
I love his comments, but considering he went bankrupt 4 times himself, I don't see any credibility at all.

Dman on 6/17/2015 11:29:20 AM
One of Donald's greatest asset is that he never lets the little details, like facts, get in his way. The man has no credibility whatsoever.

RAJ on 6/17/2015 12:04:39 PM
Charles, you are right. The Donald said what more of them should be saying!

William S. Brown on 6/17/2015 12:18:33 PM
Egotistic...absolutely! But FINALLY someone who speaks clearly & confidently about the many issues that not only need to be addressed but resolved. These are the topics around family dinner tables. He is no pansy when it comes to leadership. A no-nonsense guy with practical solutions. Probably too practical for Washington. Hope he surprises us all. Could just be the hope & change we need.

Merlyn on 6/17/2015 1:27:42 PM
I actually found him refreshing. Our government is filled with spineless self seving men who vote themselves raises opt out of Social Security and Obamacare as far as I know. Look at our national debt!!

Charlene Voss on 6/17/2015 1:57:30 PM
dogs don't sweat

JMR on 6/17/2015 2:10:03 PM
would love to see a debate between Donald and Hillary.

Trump is not what this country needs. The country needs to get back on a moral compass and not continue to play partisan politics around economics (who can take from whom). Trump will combine a lot of the worst of recent politics, but then the man is more of a politician than a businessman or thinker. His "reality" shows are about bullying and maneuvering, not finding best solutions. His tools are politician tools and he wields them with great politician skill.

By "the worst of recent politics" I mean:
1) Divisive rhetoric. This is obviously his primary tool, just like the current joke residing in the White House.
2) Lies: the #2 tool of the current travesty. Trump can't slap a 35% tariff on Fords coming from Mexico.
3) Stupidity. Import tariffs can be a good tool if wielded very carefully and sparingly. Primarily, they just destroy a country's competitiveness for decades. He focuses on Mexican immigration while ignoring the bigger problem of U.N. placement of "political refugees" in the USA. Those refugees are almost all Muslim from the two warring factions. The Sunni and Shiite countries should take their own instead of using the UN to try to take over the USA. Sunni's and Shiite's are committing mass murder against Christians, but the UN won't put them in the program for protection in the USA (or anywhere) because this UN program is all about creating Islam world dominance. Trump hasn't got a clue about that.
4) Self-interest. Obama has been raping the country and living high on the hog while doing it. Trump is the same, he doesn't display any sincere concern for America or Americans, just Donald Trump.

Trump may sound refreshing compared to the brainless bunch in D.C., but when you look under the cover, there is no vision. I say he is clearly worse than the bums we have now, but whether he is the best of the cesspool we will be given to pick from is a different question.

Bob G on 6/17/2015 3:53:37 PM
Trump is the one person running on the G.O.P. ticket that will keep me away from the polls in my 86 years. He's a bum!

Maruktb on 6/17/2015 5:22:53 PM
Bob G. you are having trouble making sense. Have no idea whether you are for or against Trump.

E.V. Wagoner on 6/17/2015 6:43:25 PM
The ONLY thing I disagree with is his solution to the immigrant situation. The incentives for people to come here have to be taken away. As long as persons can get benefits that they have not earned, they will continue to find ways to get here. Personally, I have no problems with illegal immigrants for I would do the same. If they could not get food stamps, education, etc. they would either leave the country or become constructive citizens, whom I would welcome.
As far as his import tax, it is a breath of fresh air. The only time in the history of this country when we were not in debt was under Andrew Jackson ( the greatest president of all, for many reasons) when there was a high tariff. The liberal liars who complain about losing jobs overseas to lower wages, etc. surely cannot complain about the greatest jobs growth tool of all.

I welcome Donald Trump to the race and hope he can start to put forth his programs in such a way as to not needlessly offend those who aren't going to listen anyway.

Jon H on 6/18/2015 9:01:00 AM
Love reading your morning news letters. Yes, Donald Trump is arrogant, but what he had to say was right on. I'm an older guy (75) and become fed up with both sides of Congress and the Administration. Most of the leaders are more interest in getting re-elected and wealthier than taking care of this Country. I would welcome someone like Trump to bring us back to being the best Country in the World; and what he said is what needs to be done.

Peter S on 6/18/2015 10:05:46 AM
Trump understands that the guy who is most willing to throw his weight around is the guy who makes the decisions. However, he could turn the Republican race into a riot, but if he loses, he could go third party like Perot. Hillary would love that. Trump would be far more credible if he were a uniter and not a divider.

Dennis Howard on 6/19/2015 6:19:55 AM
YES, The Donald said what more of them should be saying, he is right for America. Most people unfortunately do take him serious, I do.
