Reagan's Gambit

1/28/2016
By Charles Payne, CEO & Principal Analyst

On January 5, 1980, Ronald Reagan decided to skip the Iowa GOP primary debate.  Much is being made of the fact that he went on to win the whole ball of wax with one the most decisive victories in presidential election history.

But here are some key facts to consider:

Coasting

Reagan was leading in the polls big time and felt secure.

Novel

It was the first GOP primary debate since 1948 and seemed novel and unimportant.

Lost

George Bush sunk a lot of resources into Iowa and gained traction after the debate.

After losing Iowa not only did Ronald Reagan learn the importance of debates, he actually paid for the next one in New Hampshire.  Moreover, after winning that state’s primary Reagan fired his campaign manager John Sears.

So, is missing debates for any reason a dangerous gamble?  As one very popular political figure would say, “You betcha!”
