Man vs. Machine- No Contest!
10/21/2015
Consider DRC-Hubo, the robot that just won the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robot challenge by doing eight tasks in the shortest amount of time: 1. Get into a standard human vehicle and drive it to a specified location. 2. Get out of the vehicle and travel across rubble. 3. Clear obstacles from a doorway. 4. Open the door, and enter the building. 5. Find a leaking pipe and close the associated valve. 6. Reconnect a hose or cable. 7. Climb a ladder. 8. Grab a tool from the site; break through a concrete wall and exit. The thing is it took DRC-Hubo 45 minutes to complete the tasks, while many of his rivals couldn’t; one even lost its head after falling during the challenge. As for the tasks that were completed, one researcher said it took his ten- year-old daughter 10 minutes to pull them off. So, humans are safe for now, as long as they’re ready to work day or night, break a sweat, and work a forklift.
